About "Why Foster?"
Every child deserves a home and Why Foster? is dedicated to finding prospective foster homes in Washington State . We provide support and information for potential foster parents and assist them through the licensing process.
Why Foster? is a state-wide program coordinated through the Downtown Seattle YMCA's Family Services and Mental Health Program. The program is funded through a public contract with the State of Washington. For over 20 years, YMCA Family Services and Mental Health has recruited and trained therapeutic foster parents in King County .
The Downtown Seattle YMCA provides a wide range of supports to foster children and young adults aging out of the foster care system. The YMCA philosophy focuses on developing caring relationships and meeting the needs of the whole child or young adult and not simply solving individual problems. As is true in all YMCA programs, the focus is not on an individual's problems, but on identifying strengths and providing the resources to help the person build on them.
